Ilham Aliyev told state television the aircraft was hit by fire from the ground over Russia and rendered uncontrollable by electronic warfare.

At least 38 people were killed in the crash, which saw an Azerbaijani airliner brought down over Kazakhstan on December 25.

Russia has refused to comment on claims that its air defence systems shot down the airliner, in an incident which killed 38 of the 67 people onboard.
